REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – A video of a young unwed mother in Cebu being criticized and humiliated by a Catholic priest that officiated the baptismal rights of her son and has gone viral online and has gotten the ire of netizens.

In the video, taken on July 6, Fr. Romeo Obach of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer is seen berating in Cebuano an unwed 17-year-old mother, telling her how humiliating it is to have a child with a man who is not her husband.

The young mother was reportedly left by her boyfriend for another girl and even attempted to commit suicide, and later sought pyschiatric help.

The Catholic Church’s canon law allows children of unwed couples to be baptized, but unwed couples are encouraged by Catholic priests to get married in church when they are able.

Fr. Obach has since issued a public apology to the mother of the child and her immediate family, saying:

“The words I said and the rude attitude that I showed before I performed the rite of baptism last Sunday, July 6, 2014 at the Sacred Heart Chapel, Jagobiao, Mandaue City was indeed unbecoming.”

Back in January, Pope Francis baptized the child of an unmarried couple at the Sistine Chapel in Rome, Italy.

The Pope reportedly encouraged priests to baptize the children of unmarried women in order to pass the Christian faith on, calling those who refuse “hypocrites’.
