Pinoy political expert: Arroyo’s UN petition won’t go anywhere

SAN FRANCISCO – To win in the court of public opinion.

This, according to political science expert Jay Gonzalez, is the motive behind former Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s case being brought before the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, by no less than international lawyer Amal Alamuddin-Clooney, wife of Hollywood A-lister, George Clooney.

“Look, they’ve succeeded right? The media and the people are talking about it. Their attention grabbing approach is to get her sympathy from the people,” pointed out Gonzalez.

The petition calls for the release of Arroyo, who is suffering from a rare bone disease. Arroyo is being detained for plunder charges.

But Gonzalez said that doesn’t mean the petition will actually make it to the agenda of the UN body.

“There has none been on an individual, because the UN really deals with sovereign government and countries.”

Another reason why Gonzalez believes Arroyo’s case will not gain ground in the UN body — the UN has been made aware of alleged human rights violations such as extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances committed under Arroyo’s nine-year presidency.

Gonzalez expressed, “Definitely, that will be part of the investigation. These are records that have been filed and will look at these records.”

And besides, Gonzalez said, whatever the council comes up with is really just a guide. There is no enforceability.

He said, “They may, for a slim chance, consider it in their agenda and may have a decision that will favor the former President Arroyo, but who’s going to enforce it in the Philippines?”

Gonzalez added that none of the cases of Alamuddin-Clooney’s controversial international clients have made it to the UN body’s agenda. And he predicts, Arroyo’s case will be no different.

There are so many experts from around the world who predicted this and that…experts who predicts outcome on something beyond their control and they would do it for the mere popularity (wants a piece of the pie) a say so on many things…but the pendulum swings right to left, or vice-versa, and the outcome could very well be your worst nightmare…dealing with politics, hope you’ve got your blood pressure under control…
