REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – While back-up goalie Nick Rimando represents Filipino Americans on Team USA in the World Cup, there is another Filipino running the field.

The Netherlands’ team has mid-fielder Jonathan de Guzman who was born to a Filipino father and a Jamaican mother.

The 26-year-old free-kick specialist was born in Canada but took up Dutch citizenship in 2008 to play for the Netherlands at the Beijing Olympics.

De Guzman said he could have played for Canada but felt he had a better chance at winning by playing for the Flying Dutchmen who finished second in the 2010 World Cup.

On Monday the Netherlands defeated Chile 2-0 and will advance as Group B winners to play against Mexico on Sunday.
