Pinoy inspired “Kahoy” sunglasses take LA’s fashion scene by storm

LOS ANGELES – One of the newest sunglass trends in Hollywood is Pinoy powered — right down to the name.
Kahoy Kollections has become a must-have in Hollywood, with members of the Dancing with the Stars seen rocking the wooden framed glasses.
“I wanted to do something fresh, Eco friendly that has a bit of luxury to it. So I went to sell sunglasses and eyeglasses and it’s a great industry to be a part of,” said founder Ralph Santos.
The idea was started less than two years ago by Ralph Santos. Born and raised and Guam, the Fil-Am entrepreneur wanted to start an Eco friendly business that also helped push Philippine culture to the mainstream.
“Growing up, identity was an issue that a lot of people struggled with and we live in a post racial society right now and we want people to connect with their culture. Our tag line is, ‘Explore and Reconnect’. We we want people to explore and reconnect with their culture using Kahoy as a platform to just relate to their roots,” recalled Santos.
The bamboo material for the unique sunglasses comes from Japan. But Santos is exploring possibilities of using Philippine bamboo to create the products, as well as teaming with other community organizations in the Philippines to make the business grow.
“Bamboo is the most sustainable wood. It doesn’t use a lot of water to grow and it’s the most lightweight and comfortable wood,” he added.
With the sunglasses also available in boutiques throughout Southern California, Santos is hoping to carry its momentum.
