Filipina American rapper Ruby Ibarra, who has become a rising star in the music industry since her 2017 debut album “Circa 91,” has been wanting to give back to the community.
Two years ago, Ibarra teamed up with San Francisco State University ethnic studies professor Dr. Allyson Tintiangco-Cubales, and together they founded the Pinays Rising scholarship.
Once again, they are accepting applications from self-identifying Pinays who will be taking college courses in the fall of 2020.
“The whole purpose of this scholarship program is to really provide first and foremost a financial resource for Pinays who feel like they don’t have access to these opportunities, because I know speaking for myself, a first generation Filipina immigrant, when I thought about higher education — that wasn’t necessarily a space where I felt I belonged in or felt I had access or resources to excel in.”
This year, Pinays Rising is aiming to provide scholarships to six recipients, but will add more if they receive more donations.
“I also want to emphasize this is not about GPA or test scores. One big thing that we really want to emphasize, rregardless of what someone’s major is, that we’re hoping they have a sense of community and a sense of commitment to that community. We’re looking for people who are using all kinds of forms, whether that be activism or art or science or anything, and that they’re really trying to do something with whatever their degree is going to be to serve their communities. And we’re looking for people who identify as Pinay and Pinay-x, and really identifying with both the struggle of being Pinay, but also feeling that that’s also a sense of power,” said Dr. Allyson Tintiangco-Cubales.
The application is a two-part process, which involves filling out a questionnaire and providing a one minute video explaining your work.
“The deadline to submit is Friday, May 22 at 11:11 pm PST. No Filipino time!”
