Pinay weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz medals twice at World Championships
ANAHEIM, CA — It wasn’t the gold. But after lifting a total of 199 kilograms, Hidilyn Diaz managed to snatch up a pair of medals at the International Weightlifting World Championships.
She took home the bronze for the total lifts, and her 113 clean and jerk helped snag silver.
“I did my best but Hindi pa Yung best ko. Marami pa dapat ma improves sa akin, but I’m so grateful naging kalabasan ng laro ko, na gawa ko at na patunayan ko ulit sa Sarili ko na Kaya ko.”
Diaz failed to snatch her opening 85-kilogram lift, but she came back hit 86, Diaz who has a career best of 97 failed to clear 90.
Needing to do better in the clean and jerk for a shot at the medal, she managed to push her way up to 113.
“Medjo wala ko sa condition pero it’s ok wala ko sa focus so ayun medjo nag da doubt ako sarili ko so kailangan ko itrain lang utak ko.”
Diaz did beat Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Shu-Ching — the 2016 gold medalist — bringing home the world championship is Thailand’s Sopita Tanasan.
“Marami pa ako gusto Gawin gusto ko pa mas malakas ako pero siguro iwanan na natin for asian Games, Tokyo 2020. I will surprise you. Mahaba pa panahon. This is the beginning kayang kaya yan tiwala lang.”
While Diaz was all smiles during her successful lifts, she was just as happy meeting with local Filipinos who came out to support her.
The Asian Games will take place in Jakarta this August, giving the Rio games silver medalist some time to rerack, refocus, and set her sights on heavier goals.
