Pinay group sparks debate on ‘X Factor UK’

After advancing to “The X Factor UK” for their powerful audition, the all-Filipina group Fourth Power now faces questions on whether they should be allowed on the show.

During their audition, Filipino sisters Mylene, Irene, Clina and Almira left the audience in awe with their explosive performance of Jessie J’s “Bang Bang.”

The judges were likewise blown away, predicting that the sisters’ audition will go viral. Even notoriously hard-to-please judge Simon Cowell only had praises for the group.

But not everyone was pleased after news in the UK spread that the sisters are professional singers.

First introduced as Gollayan sisters, the quartet had previously performed in singing competitions. For instance, they won a contest on ABS-CBN’s noontime show “It’s Showtime” back in 2012.

They also won at the World Championships of Performing Arts in 2013. And in 2014, they joined the South Korean talent show “Superstar K6” under the name M.I.C.A. but failed to make it to the finals.

Some quarters questioned why the group was allowed to join the British talent search.

Amid the debate, the sisters admitted that they have joined various competitions all over the world in a pre-recorded video that was shown before their audition.

The producers of “The X Factor” are also aware of their background.
