REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – Close to six decades of performing and there seems to be no slowing down for 78-year-old Pilita Corrales.
Pilar “Pilita” Corrales was born in Lahug, Cebu in 1937 to a Spanish father and a Filipino mother. She went to finish her studies in Cebu and in Spain.
But after her father’s death, she began using her musical talents to provide for her mother and siblings.
“”At least the talent that God gave me, I was able to use, for them to be finish their schooling, until they got married. I was lucky enough, but it was hard work,” she shared.
Corrales began her recording career in Australia where her song, “Come Closer to Me” topped the charts. In the 1960s, she pursued a career in the Philippines where she showed her versatility as a singer, TV and radio host, and even as a movie actress.
Through the personal invitation of the legendary American crooner, Sammy Davis, Jr., Corrales became the first Filipino to sing at the main showroom of the Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas.
And she said, even then, kababayans in America came to support her. She said, “They would come by bus from LA, from San Francisco. It was exciting, wonderful, unforgettable with Sammy Davis, Jr.”
To date, Corrales has over 135 albums to her credit and has appeared in concert venues all over Asia, the Middle East, Australia and North America.
She recently became a judge on the first season of the X-Factor Philippines.
As a piece of advice to the younger generation of Filipino talents, Corrales shares her secret to longevity. She expressed, “For those people who are in this business and want to stay in this business, you really have to go with the times. You have to stay current.”
Corrales is now in California to treat her fans to her classic hits and brand of showmanship in a series of concerts starting October 9.
To her fans who supported her all these years, Corrales had this to say: “So I hope they still remember me. I hope they come and see me, see the show for a worthy cause. And I can promise them that they are going to have a nice evening.”
