CALGARY, ALBERTA — The Philippine bobsled team, composed of Philippine coastguard members Joseph Acosta, Jeffrey Angeles, Jerby Deriada and Rey Fernandez, has been training in Calgary since October in preparation for a competition in Vancouver on November 17.
Last March, the team won third place at the Alberta Cup provincial championship.
The team hopes to be the first-ever bobsled team from southeast Asia to compete in the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022.
“Iyung preparation is good and mas maaga and then may mga taong sumuporta sa amin in regards sa training and nagprovide ng mga kailangan namin — gym, facility.”
“Our preparation is good and it started early. And then there are people who have supported us with regards to training and providing us with our needs – gym, facility.”
To help the Philippine Bobsled team achieve their goals – some Filipino Canadians have come together to raise funds.
“The Philippine government has minimal support on our athletes especially back home. So, we are here kind of trying to raise funds for them in order for them to be trained properly, to have the right facilities, to even have the right gear.”
“Grabe ang pag buhos ng mga suporta sa amin ng mga Pilipino.”
The members of the philippine bobsled team said they’re dedicating their achievements to their families, the Philippine coast guard and fellow Filipinos.
“We have one vision. We want to make it to the Beijing 2022 Olympics.”
After their competition in Vancouver, the team will go back to Calgary to continue with their training and persevere even more to make their dreams a reality.
