LOS ANGELES – It was one last side trip for the Philippines Special Olympics team.
Proudly wearing their medals, the Philippine delegation took a meryenda break at a local Filipino restaurant in historic Filipinotown.
It was their first Filipino meal in nearly two weeks as they participated in the Special Olympics games and festivities, winning 59 total medals.
They received a warm welcome from local Filipino community leaders and some members of media.
Most of the team flew back to the Philippines Monday night.
In the meantime, a small scare for a few Special Olympic athletes. Two athletes this week were reported missing — one athlete from Ivory Coast wandered off from the Los Angeles International Airport as soon as his delegation arrived. He was found in Inglewood a few hours later.
In a separate incident over the weekend, an Albanian athlete had vanished Saturday night, but was eventually found some 400 miles away in Hayward.
