REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – Typhoon Yolanda relief efforts continue in the Philippines and a new incentive is hoping to increase donations from the U.S.
President Barack Obama signed into law the “Philippines Charitable Giving Assistance Act on Tuesday, which allows taxpayers who donate relief efforts in the Philippines before April 15, 2014, to take charitable deductions, when they file their 2013 tax returns.
Senator Mazie Hirono of Hawaii first introduced the measure, hoping to boost new donations to help more than four million Filipinos displaced by the storm.
For people who wish to donate but have already filed their tax returns, an updated return is needed to take advantage of this new incentive.
