The Philippines may be a tropical country, but one athlete is going to the Winter Olympics for the first time in 20 years.

Michael Christian Martinez from Muntinlupa is going to this February’s Winter Olympics in Russia for the men’s figure skating competition. He clinched a spot over the weekend at a competition in Germany. The 17-year-old Martinez who trains in Southern California is the first Filipino athlete to qualify in the Winter Games since 1994. Thirty men have qualified for the Olympics, however there will be one more round of qualifying competitions in Sochi Russia which will narrow down the competing field to 24.
