NEW YORK – At least seven people are dead following a massive explosion at Madison Ave. and 116th St. in East Harlem in New York yesterday morning.
Official reports say 70 people were injured, 23 of them were reported in severe condition.
Nine people have yet to be located.
The explosion leveled two apartment buildings Wednesday morning after a gas leak was reported to utility company Con Ed.
The Philippine Consulate in New York says 650 Filipinos live in East Harlem, but there are no reports of injured Filipinos at this time.
Jersey City resident Mark Leonida works in an office three buildings away. He says he came to the area just minutes after the explosion.
Leonida says his workplace was damaged and he may not be able to go to work for about a week while repairs get made.
“My coworkers told me, that the office, the windows blew in, that the building was shaking for a while,” Leonida said. “It’s a little overwhelming. I’m a little numb. Right now I’m just glad, it could have been a lot worse. I know they’re still finding people under the rubble.”
