MANILA – For the first time since he was accused of killing Filipino transgender Jennifer Laude, US Marine Lance Corporal Joseph Pemberton has admitted hitting and choking Filipino transgender Jennifer Laude.
But in his direct testimony in court, U.S. Marine Lance Corporal Joseph Pemberton alleged this was done in defense of his honor and life after he there was an exchange of blows between them when he found out that a fellow male gave him oral sex.
Pemberton gave his version of the events that transpired on the night of Oct. 11, 2014, when Laude was killed, according to Atty. Harry Roque, the private lawyer for the Laude family who was inside the court room when Pemberton testified.
Pemberton told the court that on that day, his unit was on rest and recreation in Subic after a tour of duty. After a day of shopping, he went bar hopping with some friends.
At the Ambyanz bar in Olongapo, he met two people whom we thought were girls named Barbie and Jennifer. After a couple of drinks, the three got a room at the Celzone Lodge.
Pemberton said Barbie was the first to perform oral sex on him. After Barbie left, Jennifer performed the same act on him.
But when they were about to have sexual intercourse, he was shocked to find out that his partner was a biological male.
Pemberton told the court he instinctively pushed Jennifer off the bed. In retaliation Jennifer allegedly slapped the Marine, then an exchange of blows followed.
The Marine said he then brought Jennifer’s body to the bathroom to try to wake her up from her unconscious state. He left Jennifer allegedly still alive inside the motel room.
However, hearing Pemberton’s side only angered Julita Laude, Jennifer’s mother, who believes Pemberton is lying, and wondered why Pemberton needed to beat him and choke him to death.
