Paralyzed Canada Pinay gets help in deportation fight

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – A paralyzed Filipina in Canada who was ordered to be deported has gained a government ally in her fight to stay in the country.

Alberta Health Minister Sarah Hoffman said on Wednesday that she will contact the federal immigration minister and try to stay the deportation of 29-year-old Maria Victoria Venancio.

Venancio was paralyzed in 2012 in a car accident.

Unable to work, Venancio’s work permit and health insurance have expired, and her deportation was ordered in February.

As her advocate, Health Minister Hoffman also pledged to look for ways to obtain healthcare services for Venancio.
