Pageant coach tells story of coaching Philippine beauty queens

CERRITOS, CA — Miss World 2013, Miss Universe 2015, and Miss International 2016 Philippine beauty queens have been on a remarkable run the past few years — but behind Megan Young, Pia Wurtzbach and Kylie Versoza is the beauty queen maker.

Jonas Gaffud, after 16 years of coaching and managing some of the Philippines most beautiful women with Aces and Queens, now has the title of author, launching his book “The Crown.”

“The Crown is about my story in the word of beauty pageants and how I train girls and actually how we evolved in training girls, and there’s are some tips.”

The Crown includes of some of the girl’s biographies, achievements, and struggles.

After a trip to Miss Universe earlier this month, Gaffud was joined by a pair of his prodigies for a book signing in Southern California.

“I never thought a book would come out of it but a lot of queens a lot of successes were made because of Ace and Queens, and it’s great to see that in a book now,” said Wurtzbach.

The tips in the book are familiar to Wurtzbach — only the third Filipina to win the Miss Universe crown.

“There’s a lot of lessons that I learned. Definitely before you compete, he’ll make you cry. But if you cry that’s good, you’re learning good. You’re learning well.”

“There are tips, but it’s up to a girl naman if it’s her destiny to win or not,” says Jonas.

Gaffud has now begun the next chapter of their story, fielding around 40 girls to enter in pageants next year, hoping to find the next one to win the crown.
