Once on This Island, featuring Lea Salonga, to celebrate Filipino night
NEW YORK CITY — Tony-winning Broadway star Lea Salonga has good news for theater fans – the revival of the musical “Once on This Island” is set to have a Filipino night this month.
Filipina goddess of song Salonga plays Erzulie – the goddess of love in the Broadway revival of the musical Once on This Island.
Once on This Island is a story of an orphan named Ti Moune, who was saved by the gods from a disastrous flood in the Caribbean.
Years later, the grown-up Ti Moune — played by Haley Kilgore — calls on the gods to guide her and let her know her purpose in life.
New York Times says this revival is a big, bold, ravishing delight. New York 1 says it’s impossible to resist.
Those who have seen this production agree, and have raved about the beauty and power of this musical that can change people.
“At the end of it, love prevails, which is a message of hope that we need to hear, I think more often than we have been hearing it,” said Salonga. “It’s a good show to see, it’s very healing.”
An audience member asked the award-winning Broadway star if there will ever be another Lea Salonga.
“No, there will not be another Lea Salonga, there will be a first of Eva Noblezada, Jon Jon Briones, Devin Ilaw, Rachell Ann Go, Sarah Geronimo, whoever, and that should be how it’s supposed to be, huwag na tayong gumaya or kumopya pa kung sino pa man. We have to each find who we are.”
February 25 is Filipino night on the island.
Those who will catch the 7:30 pm show at the Circle in the Square theater can stay for a talkback with some of the cast members.
