Obama wants community college to be free

By CNNMoney

NEW YORK – Free education “for those willing to work for it.”

That’s what President Obama announced Friday in a bid to make the first two years of community college free for “responsible” students.

The president announced the proposal at Pellissippi State Community College in Knoxville, Tenn., a significant location.

“America’s College Promise” is modeled after a Tennessee program (called “Tennessee Promise”), which covers the cost of community college tuition not covered by grants and scholarships. It also requires the student to have a mentor, perform 8 hours of community service per term, and maintain a 2.0 GPA.

The president teased the proposal in a video announcement on Facebook and Vine Thursday evening.

If passed, Obama’s plan would require both federal and state governments to split the tab. States would have the option to participate.

“No one with drive and discipline should be denied a college education simply because they can’t pay for it,” Obama said Friday. “A college degree is the surest ticket to the middle class.”

Obama’s would also require congressional legislation, which is expected to be difficult now that Republicans control both the House and Senate.

If every state participated, the proposal could help 9 million students and save full-time enrollees an average of $3,800 a year, according to the White House.

why is obozo interfering on the businesses of the states?, when he is incapable to run the federal government in the first place. obozo is slowly but surely is spreading his toxic commie, socialist political ploy to the locals. these are the following reasons, why obozo is into intrusions of the problems faced by individual states.

    1) obozo is building smoke screen to avoid the displeasure the elephant will force him to face. obozo’s alternative is to make him look like he is for the younger people’s future of free higher educations, as his fallback in vetoing the elephant’s straight proposals, making himself look like he is doing much more for the people’s benefits of higher educations, so that the public will not focus on his bad intents of stonewalling the elephant’s passed bills, meant to be good for america/americans.

    2) obozo’s plan is to embarrass his elephant adversaries on their disagreements of free higher educations, ignoring the fact, he had been pushing america to current status of financially BROKE. obozo is still on non stop borrowing to the deepest 20trillion debt or more by the end of 2016, his final year of wasting the taxpayers money, proved himself as an a$$hole POTUS is his legacy. obozo knows nothing but FREE is good, one of many of his tricks of buying votes for his demonicrap party, wooing the new generation voters with the false promises of the anti businesses demonicraps.

    3) obozo/his demonicrap bozos are corrupt, they will be using states free higher education to reroute the dream act qualifying illegal aliens, the same way they are now qualifying illegal aliens for government freebies, with likelihood down to obummercare.

all the moves of obozo are more reckless spendings. since obozo got elected the college graduates to date are sufferings for not securing jobs in their fields of endeavors. obozo, the compulsive liar has the nerve to even say “a college degree is the surest ticket to the middle class”, obozo always a laughing liar to make fun of those he thinks are idiots to believe his lies. again obozo is fooling those he can fool. obozo is always in fantasyland, what he needs is a strong hit in the head to face reality, that he was/is the caused of jobless college graduates, the middle class killer, the job killer, the same way he promised, he will veto/kill the pipeline proposal of the elephant.

there are tons of private contributors of scholarships to pile in billions for smart students, who are willing to explore what’s out there in colleges/universities all over the 50 states. of course! nothing are given to the smartest student in a platter, its all up to individuals to take advantages of what/where are the scholarships offers seating somewhere, ready to be grabbed by the wise students, mind you, being smart alone will not guarantee success in life. there are many smart people that turn out to be losers. the wise student with average intelligence will likely be the winner in the end.

the free higher education motive of obozo is for his own self survival in the next two years, to make the elephant look like anti higher education for all, who want to go to college. the elephant will not fund obozo’s initiative of free higher education for all. this will become a block in passing bills of the elephant with obozo, who will be finding excuses, he thinks are credible of why he is into veto mood, with his concern of – there are too many younger people out there that need college education for free should be the priority of both houses, instead of passing the elephant bills. obozo is a whacko conman, with ability to think crooked, so he can screw up america and its people. what the public need to watch is – what’s the next devious plan of obozo, in order to destruct his elephant opponents, and to make him look good to those he continue to fool.

” As someone who has spent over 15 years teaching at community colleges, I cannot think of a worse idea than President Obama’s proposal for the federal government to provide “free” community college tuition nationwide. Here’s why:

Nothing in life is “free”: The lesson we should be teaching our students is that nothing of value is free. “Free community college” for students translates into “a tax increase for somebody else.” Who is going to pay for the billions of dollars it will cost to provide “free” tuition at community colleges, which are heavily subsidized by taxpayers already? College should be affordable, but students need to responsibly shoulder most of the cost.

The federal government has no business in education: Article 1, Sec. 8 of the Constitution enumerates the powers of the federal government. Education is not one of them. The 10th Amendment stipulates that all powers not granted to the federal government belong to the states – and this includes education from kindergarten through graduate school. States are perfectly capable of maintaining community colleges without interference from federal bureaucrats in Washington, D.C., and all the strings they will invariably attach to the “free” program.

You get what you pay for: If community college becomes “free,” it will attract even more unserious students than the ones already enrolled in community colleges. Anecdotally, I’d say that about half the students in community colleges are not ready for college-level work. (I worked at one community college in which the department that offered the most course sections of any department on campus was the remedial education department.) Many students enroll in community colleges simply because they were handed a high-school diploma based on grade inflation and social promotion and have no clue what to do next. Fall semesters tend to produce the worst students; many simply disappear without a trace after a few weeks. Those who hang around until the spring semester are usually more serious. It’s also true that some community college students “game” the financial aid system; they attend long enough to get their checks, then vamoose.

Of course, there are excellent students in community colleges, too. They tend to fall into two categories: adult students, such as veterans, laid-off workers, retirees, and housewives; and students enrolled in highly-selective technical programs like nursing, radiologic technology, and dental hygiene. But community college administrators rely heavily on maximizing the enrollment of “live bodies with a pulse” in general and remedial studies to subsidize the technical programs, which are often costly and are money-losers for the institution.

Obama’s proposal will promote grade inflation: The Obama proposal is to provide “free” tuition for students who maintain a C+ average. This will almost certainly result in rampant grade inflation (which is prevalent already). If a student deserves a grade of C, D, or F, the faculty member assigning the grade will be pressured to issue a C+ anyway. The pressure will come from the faculty themselves, who often will not want the guilt of costing the student thousands of dollars; it will come from students, begging for a C+ and offering sob stories at the end of the semester; and it will come from administrators, conscious of the financial cost to the institution if too many students fail out or drop out.

Federally guaranteed tuition will increase inefficiency and patronage: Community colleges are often swamps of political patronage, nepotism, and favoritism. Non-teaching employees and administrators are lavishly paid, and they frequently get their jobs through political or personal connections. Community college presidents can easily make a quarter-million per year (or more). Many do not have academic degrees. Administrators, deans, clerks, coaches, and other non-teaching faculty often make solid five- or six-figure incomes. But it is usually a different story for teaching faculty. Many community colleges rely upon adjunct faculty to teach 70% to 80% of their course offerings. Adjuncts are typically paid in the neighborhood of $2,000 (or less) per course, and they work on a per-semester contract without any benefits or job security.

If the federal government guarantees a source of income for community colleges, it is nearly certain that administrators will use it to line their own pockets and increase patronage and nepotism hires, while continuing to rely on untenured itinerant labor for teaching faculty.

The idea that local communities should make available an affordable, no-frills post-secondary education for students without the financial resources or SAT scores to attend institutions like Duke or Yale is a sound one. But community colleges should be supported and maintained by local governments based on the needs of the local job market, and they should maintain sufficient academic rigor so that a student who attends has some “skin in the game” and pays his tuition based upon a mature cost-benefit analysis relative to his educational and career aspirations.

The Obama proposal will turn community college into yet another entitlement. It will almost certainly encourage legions of students to simply burn government money and “hang out” for two years after high school before they start to get serious about education, careers, and life in general. Community college should be an opportunity for mature young adults – not another federal welfare program.

Obama’s free college proposal is a double down on demogoguery. Says the tyrant, “So let it be written, so let it be done.” Says the flatterers of the tyrant, “Forward!”

How To Make A Tyranny And Call It Progress: Events often catch societies unaware, inducing them to elect tyrants who retain power by fundamentally altering systems of government. Such tyrants self select to be disposed to find people to be expendable to their lusts for power. Popular or short sighted programs (like Lysenko’s) often lead to decimations of segments of society that are “ungrateful” to Dear Leaders. These programs tend to be of the “free lunch” variety, such as free education, free health care, free safety net, etc. When the bill comes and cannot be paid, goats are found, either to divert blame from the regime or to advance a new demagogue. People and institutions put fingers to the wind, to rationalize, flatter and exhort on behalf of trending stars and usurpers. This is how obvious incompetents, such as Pelosi and Boehner, seize and retain power.

Competition among tyrants often leads them to promise unsustainable, centrally ruled programs. Like gamblers, tyrants cannot quit while winning. If a program wins votes and supporters and does not sink the republic, they double down for a new program. If Obama succeeded in providing for free education, he would eventually call for paying people to go to college. Indeed, he would call for paying “his people” to breathe. Eventually, centrally controlled gov so regulates all private industry as in effect to replace it. After Government Motors comes Government Parenting by he who knows the “scientific best” in all things.

Train minds of children, change the demographic, fundamentally change the system, obtain total control over the making of fiat money, fiat (Candy Crowley) debates, fiat law and fatwa religion. Then ridicule and threaten opponents, recruit shills skilled in political media and mind bending, and play competitive games of nation building against opposing regimes. When citizens resist, hang scapegoats out to dry. “The cold never bothered me anyway.

States like California does not have a lot funding. Most of the time, states rely on federal aid to repair major projects like fixing freeways. Where’s the money coming from?
