President Obama is putting gay rights in the spotlight this week.

The White House announced Tuesday that President Obama will sign a new executive order prohibiting federal contractors from discriminating against workers on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Obama, who spoke at the Democratic National Committee’s annual LGBT gala in New York Tuesday night says Congress came close to passing the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) last Novermber, but failed after the House refused to act.

“The majority of Fortune 500 companies, small businesses already have non-discrimination policies that protect their employees, not just because it’s a right thing to do but because it helps them attract and retain the best talent,” Obama said. “They’re right. We don’t benefit as a country or an economy, businesses don’t benefit if they are leaving talent off the field.”
