President Barack Obama has signed legislation that grants Filipino WWII veterans the highest civilian honor bestowed by Congress – the Congressional Medal of Honor.
On Wednesday, Dec 15, Obama privately signed the “Filipino Veterans of WWII Congressional Gold Medal Act.”
The move provides a single medal to Fil-Vets, in recognition of their bravery and service.
Fundraising efforts by various Fil-Am organizations are underway, to pay for duplicate medals to be distributed to surviving veterans or their surviving families.
The measure was championed by US Senator Mazie Hirono, and US Representative Tulsi Gabbard, both Democrats of Hawaii.
