NYPD: Alleged attack on Pinoy journalist was street altercation, not hate came

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – What happened to Pinoy journalist Randy Gener was not a hate crime, but instead it was a tragic street altercation, according to New York Police Commissioner Bill Bratton.

The altercation reportedly started because Gener accidentally bumped into the suspect Leighton Jenning’s girlfriend as they passed each other on the sidewalk.

DNA Info reports that the argument escalated when Gener allegedly kicked the woman in the chest after she allegedly threw her purse at his head, according to a criminal complaints filed at the Manhattan District Attorney.

Reports say that when Jennings stepped in, he allegedly threw a knockout punch that sent Gener to the pavement, cracking his skull.

Jennings has been released without bail after being charged with third degree assault.

While Gener remains in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

Family and friends has now raised more than $56,000 for Gener’s medical expenses.
