REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – The Big Apple will be the latest U.S. city to say no to federal immigration authorities when it comes to detaining certain undocumented immigrants in city jails.
According to a bill announced Thursday, New York City will stop honoring requests from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to hand over immigrants suspected of being in the country illegally.
They say any requests to do so must be backed by a judge.
The bill would not prevent ICE officials from pursuing immigration charges.
