NY Pinays celebrate women’s equality through continued activism

NEW YORK – At the Women’s Equality Day celebration at Union Square Park in New York City on Wednesday, women’s rights activist Alicia Boyd said, “We need to be exercising our voting power to get rid of some of these crooked politicians. Okay, let me say that again — we need to be exercising our voting power to get rid of some these crooked politicians.”

Nearly a century ago, these women would not have been able to say those words. Women had no legal right to vote then. But after decades of women’s activism, the 19th amendment, which granted women the right to vote, was passed by the US Congress in 1919 and ratified in 1920. Today, these women are celebrating the 95th anniversary of the women’s legal right to vote.

“Although people think that women are equal, we’re really not, a lot of times the women are targeted,” Fil-Am Women’s Rights Activist Jane Orendain said, “So we really need to keep fighting for the rights of the women.”

Organized by the International Working Women’s Day Coalition, they are demanding for women’s reproductive rights, $15 an hour minimum wage for all, full guaranteed rights for immigrants, and an end to all forms of racism, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia.

“No to the anti-immigration sentiments here, no to illegals, which is not the right term,” said Angelica Lado.

For many of these women, GOP frontrunner Donald Trump’ position and recent remarks on immigration and women strike a chord among women voters.

In a presidential campaign event in Dubuque, Iowa, Trump said, “A lot of gangs in Baltimore and St. Louis and Ferguson and Chicago, you know, they are illegal immigrants. They are here illegally and rough dudes, rough people. They are going to be gone so fast, if I win, that your head will spin. They will be gone so fast.”

“I don’t really have a lot of respect for him,” Orendain said. “And yes he is right in saying that he says what people are afraid to say. But there’s also a limit to how you treat people and what you say about them.”

Kinding Sindaw’s Melanie Dulfo said, “There is no legitimacy to his candidacy. What has he done for the people, nothing. There is no sincerity in his campaign. Rather than focusing on the remarks of Donald Trump, it’s more important for us to focus on the real issues to the people”

While there are two women vying for the highest office, GOP presidential candidate Carly Fiorina and Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton, some of these women activists say when it comes to voting, women are not necessarily voting for a woman candidate just because she’s a woman.

NAFCON’s Anneberyl Naguit said, “Wala rin yan sa kasarian kung paano mapapabago yung lipunan.”

“I think people should pay attention to what’s going on,” said Orendain. “Not all people of color are on your side. Not all white people are good, not all black people are bad, and just be very, very careful. Pay very close attention to the debates and when they come to visit your neighborhood and be sure that you’re choosing correctly.”

With the 2016 US and Philippine presidential elections around the corner, Orendain says this hard-earned right to vote should not be put to waste.

She says kababayans should make their votes count to make themselves matter.
