New York Filipino restaurants find ways to serve with safer practices

NEW YORK — Governor Andrew Cuomo’s statewide “stay-at-home” order does not mean customers can no longer enjoy their favorite Filipino restaurants.

Here in the Big Apple, these Filipino food favorites are making sure their customers are fed and satisfied – while ensuring safety.

Flip-Sigi has changed the way it handles pickups and to go orders: by making it safe and contact-free.

We gotta stick together and support local businesses, what that means is go on our website… you order right there, pickup your food, no touch, nice and sanitary right there,” said restaurateur Jordan Andino.

For walk-ins, Flip Sigi has set up a system focused on distancing. Andino says keeping his business open means he is also able to support those who are on the frontlines of this fight against the coronavirus.

“We wanna offer anyone that works in any hospital or any area that’s battling the virus, to come by tell us where you work and we’ll hook you up, free meal, free drink, on us here at Flip Sigi we just wanna thank you and really appreciate all the work you’re doing.”

Ugly Kitchen is now delivering food outside of their usual reach to stay open.

“We really got a lot of orders, not only because we can help them but also at the same time they help us so we can maintain and keep it open and help also the kitchen – the Ugly Kitchen family,” said restaurateur Aris Tuazon.

Tuazon said another way to keep your favorite restaurants from closing is to order gift cards for future dine in.

“We really feel the love of the community of supporting us, and supporting them at the same time, a lot of people reached out.”

The National Restaurant Association warned that the restaurant industry in the U.S. could suffer $225 billion in losses in the next three months.

The restaurant industry has asked the White House and lawmakers for a $455 billion aid package – saying not only are businesses at stake, but million of jobs as well.

For now, these restaurants are counting on their loyal customers to keep them afloat by continuing to their order their delicious food.
