New Jersey community mourns Filipino family lost in tragic car accident, with one lone survivor
TEANECK, NJ — Words could not express the pain friends, family and schoolmates felt, after the tragic death of 5 members of a Filipino family from New Jersey — who were instantly killed by a wrong-way driver in Delaware on their way home from a fun family beach vacation in Ocean City, Maryland.
An investigation shows the father, Audie Trinidad, was driving northbound on a minivan when a pick-up truck exited the roadway.
It crossed over the grassy median and into the northbound lanes, colliding with the Trinidad’s van.
The 61-year-old Audie, and his daughters Kaitlyn, 20, Danna, 17, 13-year-old twins Melissa and Allison, were all pronounced dead at the scene.
The lone survivor is Audie’s wife and mother of the 4 girls — 53-year-old Mary Rose Ballocanag from Mindoro.
Ballocanag’s Aunt Lydia Agas paid her a visit at the Christiana Hospital in Newark, Delaware.
Ballocanag’s condition is no longer life-threatening, and she told Agas what she remembers.
“She said she was asleep, when she woke up, the husband was on her chest leaning, she just wondered what happened, she had fractures all over her body, we visited her and she was in pain.”
Hundreds of people came together at a makeshift memorial at the Votee Park in Teaneck to show their love and support for the Trinidad family.
Friends and family lit candles and left flowers as they took turns memorializing the Trinidad family.
Agas says no interment plans has been set at this time, as they are waiting for Mary Rose to recover and make that decision.
A candlelight vigil was organized by the Filipino-American Society of Teaneck, along with an online fundraiser to benefit Ballocanag.
More than $177,000 US dollars have been raised at this time.
The driver of the truck that killed the Trinidads has been identified as 44-year-old Alvin Hubbard of East New Market, Maryland.
The cause of the fatal crash is still under investigation, and no charges have been filed yet.
