REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – A gun control measure that focuses on mental health is set to hit the floor of the California State Senate this week.

AB-1014, or “the gun violence restraining order”, would allow enforcement, family members, or roommates of a person who shows warning signs of violent behavior to ask a judge to ban that person from having or buying a gun for up to a year.

The bill was authored by Berkeley Assemblywoman Nancy Skinner and comes less than three months after a troubled young man killed six people and wounded 16 in a shooting spree in the town of Santa Barbara.

The bill must be passed in the State Senate and Assembly by August 31 before it can go to Governor Jerry Brown for approval.

Is it fair for people who show warning signs of violent behavior to be prohibited from possessing or buying a gun?
