CHICAGO, IL – The Chicago community mourns the loss of Jerry Umanos, 57, a Filipino pediatrician, who was killed last Thursday when an Afghan security guard opened fire at a Kabul hospital.
Umanos, prior to spending his last seven years training young doctors in Afghanistan and helping poor and sick children, served at the Lawndale Christian Health Center in Chicago for over 16 years.
The entire Chicago community was in shock and did not see the sad news coming.
“We heard about it on the news when it happened. It was just horrible,” Umanos’ neighbor Evan Wilson said.
“It’s a tragedy,” another of Umanos’ neighbors, Kristi Mosbey, said. “Here, especially in Hyde Park, we are such a family-oriented community. It’s a great loss.”
As the community extends their sympathies to the family, neighbors said he may be gone but he will not be forgotten.
“My heart goes out to you,” Wilson added. “I cannot imagine how hard it is for you.”
“Our hearts and our community go out to you. I know for one, as a business owner as well as the other local business owners, we’re here for you. We’re so sorry for your loss,” Mosbey said.
