INGLEWOOD, CA — Mercito Gesta went the distance with lightweight champion Jorge Linares, but despite showing some early aggression, and landing some excellent punches, Gesta lost to his Venezuelan foe by wide unanimous decision.
There were no knockdows — and a few entertaining exchanges. But in the end, Linares managed to land open shots against the Freddie Roach-trained Gesta.
The Filipino fighter’s record now slips with 31 wins, 2 losses and 2 draws.
The 30-year-old Mandaue-born fighter’s two career losses have both been in world title bouts.
Linares’ record now stands at 44-and-3 and was hoping to challenge the top fighters in the lightweight division.
Despite the loss, “No Mercy” was in high spirits, greeted by fans as he left the Forum.
