ST. GEORGE, Utah – Former beauty queen Melanie Marquez is recovering from a fractured spine and sternum after her vehicle slid off an icy highway on Dec. 7.

Recalling the crash, Marquez said she’s lucky to be alive.

“I was pleading there for someone to stop,” an emotional Marquez told Balitang America. “No one stopped.

“I [was] just waiting, hoping, praying that before it gets dark, we will be rescued.”

The accident happened near the Utah-Arizona border, when Marquez’s vehicle hit a patch of black ice and slid down a 12-foot canal around 5:30 p.m.

Despite her injuries, Marquez climbed out of the damaged vehicle and hiked to an area where she could call for help – something she considers a miracle.

“It was an angel who lifted me up. I know very well I had someone with me there,” she said.

About an hour after the incident, all four passengers were rescued, including Marquez’s 12-year-old son Adam, who escaped with just a few cuts and bruises.

The group was transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George, where Marquez was fitted with a back brace that she’ll have to wear for three months.

“I know I will recover well with all the support,” she said. “I know I will, with my faith. My faith never fails me.”

Once discharged from the hospital, Marquez plans on recovering with her family in the nearby town of Salina.
