BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – The reigning Miss World, 23-year old Megan Young recently met with the Filipino community at a gathering in Beverly Hills.

While her Miss World duties include a year’s worth of international humanitarian visits and fundraisers, Young’s biggest last-minute project has been to help her own homeland, that’s been ravaged by Typhoon Yolanda.

“I was in New York yesterday for another fundraising event. We were there to raise money for Haiti and two foundations we support in the Philippines but sadly, we had the tragic event back home with Typhoon Yolanda. We just felt the need to focus on helping our kababayans,” she said.

In the presence of foreign dignitaries, Young brought good news for the community. While in England, Miss World partnered with Sun Newspaper for a fundraiser via text messaging. The drive has raised close to $2 million for the Typhoon Yolanda victims.

“They can text and donate money from 1 pound to 30 pounds maximum. One pound can do a lot for our country,” she added.

After stops in New York and Los Angeles, Young will cross the Pacific Ocean and tour Asia, including Hong Kong, Jakarta, Philippines and even China, which the Philippines currently has territorial disputes with.

She believes her role as Miss World can bridge such tensions through philanthropy.
“The whole reason for being Miss World is to put aside things like that (differences). Your purpose is to help out people who have no voice. And you give that voice to them and you help them in any way that you can. It’s not about the fights that we have with other countries. It’s about working with them and helping out those in need,” Young expressed.

The Philippines’ first Miss World also plans to go to ground zero and have a hands-on role in typhoon relief efforts.
