Meet the Filipino-American coach helping to lead Duke University through the NCAA

There are a handful of Fil-Ams in the NCAA, but much less on the sidelines.

Coach Hernando Plannels though is one of them, as the associate head coach of women’s basketball team of Duke University.

They fondly call him Coach H, and as casual as his approach is, his journey to one of the best universities in the world has been a diverse one.

From coaching in the NBA D-League, to heading basketball camps all over the U.S., to choreographing basketball movies in Hollywood, to Japan, and even some short stints in the Philippines, Coach feels he has finally found his home at Duke.

With all his success in the U.S. and the international stage, Coach H continues to be proud of his Filipino roots and his family back home in the Philippines. He shares he is very much open to one day head back home, and help the game of basketball there too in any way possible.

But for now, Pinoy hoops fans will continue to be proud of Coach H and cheer him on from the sidelines, as we witness him grow and be contagious spreading his love for life and the game of basketball.
