Actor Marc de la Cruz became the first Asian American – a Filipino-American a that — to play the most coveted role of Alexander Hamilton on Broadway last Saturday.
The role was originated by multi-award winning actor Lin-Manuel Miranda when Hamilton: An American Musical opened on Broadway in 2015.
De la Cruz is the third Fil-Am cast member of Hamilton after Carla Garcia and Christina Glur.
The Hawaii-born Fil-Am of Japanese descent joined Hamilton as an understudy last November and has played a variety of swing roles including King George, Philip Hamilton, James Reynolds, John Laurens and Philip Schuyler among others.
Broadway diversity says, while Marc is the first Asian American man to play Hamilton on Broadway, Asian-American actors such as Jin Ha has played Hamilton in the Chicago production, and Joseph Morales is currently playing Hamilton on tour.
