Many unemployed Filipinos have had to rely on food banks to survive the pandemic

LAS VEGAS — A staggering 33 million people have received unemployment benefits as of June, and the number could get worse, as states with high COVID-19 cases scaled back on reopening economies.

During the pandemic, lawmakers have temporarily provided unemployment benefits recipients with an extra $600 per week, but that aid is set to expire after July 31.

Las Vegas, one of the hardest-hit areas, reported nearly 500,000 new unemployment claims through June 6 — the highest number in Nevada’s history,

Filipinos who have lost their jobs expressed their anxieties and concerns, especially as bills are piling up.
