Do LGBT people feel safe in the Philippines?

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – Following the murder of transgender woman Jennifer Luade in the Philippines, LGBT rights groups continue to push for dialogue on issues facing their community.

Using the “#SAFESPACE” hashtag, activists, including transgender model Geena Rocero, asked twitter followers: Do LGBT people feel safe in the Philippines?

Hundreds of tweets poured in, including one that reads, “I never thought the Philippines is safe. Bakla is still used by kids as a derogatory term.”

Jeff wrote, “It’s time the discourse on hate crimes be elevated to a national level.”

Meanwhile, students and teachers at Philippine Universities are also demanding justice for Laude, and the junking of the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA).

At the University of the Philippines Diliman, protesters burned a flag of the United States to express their anger.

    As long as you are descent and respect others and themselves. Philippines is the safest place for lgbt in the whole world.
