Eagle Rock, Calif. – With their signature signs, decorated cars and matching outfits, Filipinos recently took to the streets in Los Angeles in support of their Philippine vice presidential bet Sen. Chiz Escudero by organizing a caravan.
“It’s 100 percent supported by the senator with his blessings,” said Darna Umayam, an Escudero supporter. “The Filipinos here love Senator Escudero. There’s a lot more to come so we’re very happy.”
Nani Enriquez, also an Escudero supporter, believes he is qualified.
“I’m Bicolana, he’s Bicolano,” said Enriquez. “We come from the same place. I believe in his principles.”
Less than a year ago, Escudero and his wife, actress Heart Evangelista, visited the community for Philippine Independence Day. At that time Escudero told the media that he had not yet made a decision to run in the 2016 elections.
Now, almost a year later, Filipinos believe Escudero’s visit made an impact on overseas voters.
“His presence here was very big for the Filipino community,” said supporter Abraham Lim. “He was able to share his knowledge with the Filipinos in the US, so absolutely his presence here was very critical for the success of this event.”
While many of the attendees also support Escudero’s presidential running mate, Sen. Grace Poe, they are also eyeing his future beyond six years.
“We strongly believe that he will make a wonderful vice president and possibly the leader of our country,” said supporter Paul Devina Garcia.
Umayam, who hosted the senator last year, said that win or lose, he will visit them again after the elections for a much needed rest.
