Kababayans meet with U.S. Dept. of State officials to push for TPS passage

WASHINGTON DC – Filipinos and their advocates came in full force, traveling from all over the country, weathering the cold in the nation’s capital…all in an effort to convince the U.S. government to approve the Philippines’ request to place Filipino nationals in America on a temporary protected status (TPS) — until the Philippines recovers from Typhoon Yolanda.

TPS would help about one million Filipinos in the United States with expiring or expired visas by allowing them to temporarily stay and work in the country, so they can continue to support their families in the Philippines, following the calamity.

For the first time, kababayans and their advocates were able to meet with representatives from the US Department of State in Washington DC.

“Our meeting with the State Department was very productive because they listened to our concerns. They listened to our legal arguments. They took the data that we provided them and they openly accepted it and I believe they are really considering our concerns on this issue,” New York-based immigration lawyer Rio Guerrero said.

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, Jose Antonio Vargas, perhaps the most popular undocumented immigrant in America, also attended the meeting. He said, “They’re gathering facts. They’re making recommendations. This is going to be a test for our community. Whatever the decision is, in some ways, it’s going to show how organized and united we are and how active we are as a people.”

Meantime, Philippine Ambassador to the U.S. Jose Cuisia, Jr. met with the delegation separately to update them on the status of the TPS request.

Cuisia said based on his latest discussion with U.S. officials, they are still evaluating the Philippines’ TPS request, which was submitted on December 13. He added, “They’re also trying to get more information. They’re meeting with the Dept. of Homeland Security and USCIS. Then, of course, they will make a recommendation.”

For now, Cuisia said, he does not know what that recommendation would be and whether there’s a timeline involved in making the decision.

Cuisia though, assured the Filipino community, that the Philippine government is on top of the situation. He revealed that they are in touch with U.S. officials involved and even plan to meet with the Bureau of Population and Refugees.

Leah Obias, coordinator of the Damayan Migrant Workers Association concluded, “It’s important for us to have this dialogue (with U.S. and Philippine officials) so they know what we’re up to and why we’re pushing for TPS to pass.”

TPS for 1million illegal Filipinos from Samar & Leyte that were affected by Typhoon Yolanda. The number is too much,do you think US Immigration will believe that number? Big money for immigration lawyers, application for TPS cost a lot already and it is only in the drawing board., our kababayan will end up as a milking cow.

the passage of laws such as this group demands are not applicable to Filipinos only, such laws will be applicable to all with the same plight. this is just one loophole to create chaos in the immigration legal system, with so many natural disasters that can occur in any part of the globe.

TRULY twisted; convoluted; warped people; deeming Right for Wrong; and Good for Bad. Thousand of disaster happenning in the philippines and millions gets affected , does that means every disaster happens in the philippines, America and government will commit a suicidal decisions to approve TPS just like that ? My answer is when hell freezes.

His rants and their disgusting posts are not new… You haven’t seen all the disgusting, degrading, inhumane, hatred, racist anti immigrant comments they post here. Unless of course you subscribe to their right wing extremist ideology then you can join them for their attacks on people.

Did you just escape from the asylum? Your blathering hydrophobic foaming at the mouth soliloquy imparted absolutely nothing, and if you were trying to impress me (or anyone else) with your inane prattle you failed miserably. I regard you as nothing more than an insect to be ignored or stepped on.

Argumentum ad Hominem added to obtuse.

The easiest way of deporting illegal Filipinos living here in the US is to grant them TPS, then convince the senate to reverse the approval of TPS and America is clear of Illegal Filipinos .
