Justice for Fallen 44 demanded at NYC vigil

NEW YORK CITY – A community forum and vigil Tuesday night for the fallen 44 SAF members in the deadly clash in Mamasapano, Maguindanao was followed by questions from the members of the Filipino community.

National Federation of Filipino American Associations’ (NaFFAA) Merit Salud said, “PNoy said he was lied upon by Purisima. The question — for me it’s immaterial whether Purisima lied to him or told him the truth. The point is why did you believe Purisima?”

“If you’re a president, you should know what’s happening in the Philippines,” said Michelle Saulon of National Alliance for Filipino Concerns (NAFCON).

And then, a call to action.

Members of various Filipino organizations in New York are calling for truth, accountability and justice for the victims of the Mamasapano incident.

“Ang panawagan namin, katulad ng sambayanang Pilipino, yung truth, yung accountability, yung katotohanan sa nangyari sa Mamasapano,” said Yves Nibungco of Anak Bayan USA.

They are also calling for President Aquino’s resignation and for a transitional council to conduct elections.

”We are calling for Aquino to resign, but we are not calling for Binay to replace him,” said Bayan USA’s Bernadette Ellorin, “And those elections need to be clean, honest and credible.”

Consul Art Romua said the Philippine Consulate General in New York welcomes open dialogues such as this one and assures them that ongoing investigations in the Philippines will shed some light on the Mamasapano incident.

Romua said, “I feel these are still premature to do that. Give them some more days and we’re hoping the final picture of the investigation will be there.”

As the Philippines celebrate the anniversary of the People Power Revolution, some kababayans are asking if these activist groups are inciting another rebellion or revolution.

Nibungco said, “History teaches us that when certain crisis such as this, when the government does not listen to the people, the people have no other weapon but to take it to the streets and wage people power to force the government to step down.”

Organizers say another vigil for the Fallen 44 is set tonight at the Philippine Consulate in New York.
