Los Angeles – 2014 signals a better year FOR the American workforce.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate in the United States is 7 percent, the lowest level since November 2008.

Nevada and Rhode Island have the highest unemployment rate at 9 percent, while California, the state with the largest number of Filipinos is at 8.5 percent.

Based on a study by CSI Professionals, hiring used to be only focused on the fields of finance and accounting. But this year most companies from more industries are looking to hire.

.“It’s a better mix now,” Marge Ordiales, vice president of CSI Professionals Inc., said. “We have marketing, management, communications, graphics and design.”

Ordiales predicts a significant growth in the fields of leisure and hospitality.

“The American workforce is starting to de-stress and starting to value the quality of life, spending more time for yourself and the family,” Ordiales said.

With the Affordable Care Act now in effect and employers with 50 and more employees required to provide health coverage to full-time workers, the hiring trend is likely to be affected.

With ecommerce and social media at its peak, part-time work can lead to another trend—home business and entrepreneurship.

“You know being an entrepreneur, it is a lonely world sometimes because you’re driven and some people don’t agree,” business owner Gina Alexander said. “Weed out that fear. Weed out that excuse mentality because that’s what’s going to make you broke—your excuses.”

According to, there are a lot of options for start-up and home businesses especially in technology.

“You’ve got to do what you love,” Alexander said. “You have to find whatever it is that you love to do and you have to do it.

Alexander also adds the importance of improving your skills set and loading up on certification and training.
