LOS ANGELES, California – The fighting congressman was scheduled to kick off the four-week Los Angeles portion of training camp at the newly built extension of the Wild Card Gym on Monday.

After his morning run, however, a still jet-lagged Manny Pacquiao slept in while missing out on the afternoon practice session.

But despite the missed practice, coach Freddie Roach says he has been happy with Pacquiao’s progress.

“Condition wise, speed wise, he’s way ahead of schedule. This is the best start we’ve ever had. Coming off the Rios fight he’s really hungry,” the boxing trainer said.
Roach says he is excited for Pacquiao to train in the new Wild Card Gym, which was built at what was once a public laundry mat underneath the gym.

“We finished this gym about eight months ago and we’re waiting for Manny to come out, work out here, and I think he’s going to enjoy it. We built it for him,” he said.

Smaller than the original gym and with brand new equipment, the walls will soon be covered with pictures of the fighting congressman.

Several fighters including Miguel Cotto and Ruslan Providnikov have trained at the new gym.

“Definitely more privacy, we’ll keep people out, won’t have as many people here. And thing is, he needs to focus on his fight, he has an important fight. He needs to focus,” said Roach.

With more chances to fight the jet lag and get acclimated, Pacquiao is expected to resume his gym workout on Tuesday.
