International students concerned about future in the U.S. with new DHS directive

As if keeping up with school lessons wasn’t hard enough amid the pandemic, international students in the U.S. now have to deal with a new directive from the Department of Homeland Security.

Under the new directive for the fall semester — international students attending a full online course cannot remain in the U.S.

They will neither be issued visas, nor be allowed to enter the country.

Active students currently in the U.S. enrolled in such programs must leave the country or transfer to another school with in-person instruction to remain in lawful status.

“As an international student, it’s really stressful for me and for most of my friends ‘cause we’re not, um, U.S. citizen and we don’t know where we can go. We feel we really have no future,” said Krischelle Bolivar, an international student at Brigham Young University.

Critics of this new directive have called this an effort by the Trump administration to pressure universities into reopening – despite rising COVID-19 cases all over the country.

And for school officials — this could mean losing international students — that are paying big bucks to get a U.S. education.

According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, international students contributed $45 billion to the U.S. economy in 2018. And losing them because of this new DHS directive could result in budget cuts for universities.

Top universities like Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology sued the Trump administration on Wednesday over this new directive.

As they await their fate, these Filipino international students are scrambling to find more information and help.

There are currently more than 1 million international students in the U.S.
