Illinois Filipina escapes wrath of Midwest tornado

LAS VEGAS – While many Filipinos were focused on the devastation left by Typhoon Yolanda, Filipinos in Illinois experienced experienced a devastating tornado—one of the largest tornado outbreaks to strike the Midwest.

The national weather center rated the storm as category E.F. 4 with winds up to 190 miles per hour. Eight people reportedly died, while hundreds are left homeless. Thousands are still without power.

Leilanie Urbano was en route to Las Vegas when the tornado struck the Midwest Monday morning.

“The strong winds directly slammed onto our house, breaking things inside like mirrors and plates. Our deck was also a mess,” she said.

Urbano said that the tornado moved fast passing through Illinois. The tornado left behind a path of destruction across the Midwest.
