REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – A new oversight report showed that immigration officials decided to release more than 2,000 immigrants facing deportation primarily because of budget reasons, but without informing the Department of Homeland Security Secretary about the plan.

The report by the DHS Office of Inspector General also revealed 629 of those released had criminal convictions — some for serious offenses ranging from murder to rape to robbery to serious drug crimes.

The Obama administration had previously denied these reports for weeks.

The report also showed poor planning on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s part for the increased arrests at the Mexico border and failed to track its spending.

According to ICE, those released are in removal proceedings and continue to be monitored.
