How a Filipina art director faced challenges in Hollywood to become an Emmy nominee

Monica Sotto was at the recently concluded Emmy awards, attended by some of the biggest stars in Hollywood.

With her parents in tow, she went to the show for the first time in her life.

She was a nominee for her work in “Drunk History” on Comedy Central.
As an art director, she builds and decorates sets used in TV shows.

“As a kid, I drew a lot, I really like art. I knew I wanted to be in film. I went to film school at USC, thinking I would be a cinematographer,” Sotto said. “But I ended up falling in love with the art department: building the sets, building the world that the camera shoots.”

The Filipina-American is part of the only all-female production team nominated in the outstanding production design category.
