House passes $4.5 billion emergency aid to help thousands of migrants packed into overcrowded U.S. facilities

On Tuesday, in response to the ongoing border crisis, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a $4.5 billion emergency aid package to help thousands of migrants packed into overcrowded U.S. facilities.

The bipartisan bill includes more than $1 billion to house and feed migrants detained by the Border Patrol, and close to $3 billion to care for unaccompanied migrant children who are turned over to the Department of Health and Human Services.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi calls the U.S. treatment of these migrant children “abuse”.

“We found out that the administration is sending children back to a station in Clint, Texas, from where just days earlier those children had been removed after enduring weeks without a shower or change of clothes. When visiting these children, one lawyer reported that children are locked in their cells. They said they can’t bring themselves to play because they are trying to stay alive in there.”

As the White House threatened to veto the House bill, U.S. senators also rejected it and instead passed their own version.

President Trump blamed Democrats for failing to pass legislation on the border crisis, after this searing picture was released showing the lifeless bodies of a man and his 23-month old daughter on the bank of the Rio Grande.

Amid the border crisis, the acting commissioner of the Customs and Border Protection – John Sanders – has stepped down.
