Hawaii’s colorful art scene at Pow! Wow! Hawaii 2019

HONOLULU — New colorful murals from Pow! Wow! Hawaii 2019 are livening up Honolulu’s kakaako neighborhood.

Filipino-American artists like Aaron Martin, who is originally from Kaneohe, Hawaii, credits the Pow! Wow! movement and its founder Jasper Wong for contributing to the cultivation of Hawaii’s burgeoning art scene.

Pow! Wow! is now in its ninth year here in Hawaii. The week-long festival allows for international, national, and local artists to share their creativity with the community, through wall-sized murals.

Self-taught artist Luke Dekneef, who is painting a mural for Pow! Wow! Hawaii for the first time this year, states that he draws his inspiration from the ocean.

Pow! Wow! Hawaii falls in February every year, and along with murals, also includes gallery shows, lecture series, and live art installations from a global group of artists who aim to foster community enrichment and appreciation for the arts.
