“Gongster’s Paradise” celebrates traditional and stylized Philippine kulintang music and dance

OAKLAND, CA — Different generations of kulintang players from all over the globe, celebrating Filipino traditional music and dance at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center.

According to organizers, “Gongster’s Paradise” is the biggest kulintang event in North America.

The event celebrated the life and legacy of the father of Filipino American kulintang music — master Danongan or “Danny” kalanduyan.

Gongster’s Paradise brought together a growing kulintang community that saw a younger generation interested in the music.

Ron and Lydia Querian also founded House of Gongs — which offers kulintang, Tagalog, and eskrima classes.
