REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – Today marks the 10th anniversary of a life changing surgery for two boys from the Philippines who are alive and happy in New York State.

Clarence and Carl Aguirre were born in the Philippines as conjoined twins, joined at the top of their heads.

On Aug. 4 2004, the twins were surgically separated by a team at Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx.

Their mother Arlene Aguirre told the Associated Press that she throws two birthday parties each year for her boys — one on their actual birthday in April, and one on Aug. 4.

The family has been able to live in Scarsdale, NY over the past decade thanks to a medical visa and support from Montefiore Medical Center.

Arlene Aguirre says she hopes she and her sons will one day be American citizens.
