REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say there is a rise in influenza activity in the United States.

The number of states affected in the beginning of January was 35, but that figure has increased to 40 states just two weeks later.

The CDC says the rise in flu cases has now reached epidemic status.

Among the states affected is California, which has the most number of Filipinos. Flu-related deaths in the golden state are now at 45.

December estimates by the CDC report that only 40 percent of Americans have taken flu shots.
