REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – The Ebola virus claimed its first fatality Wednesday morning: Thomas Eric Duncan, a native of Liberia.

Duncan had been in Texas visiting family before he started having symptoms. Doctors initially treated his flu-like sickness with medication and was released.

Days later, he was re-admitted to Dallas Presbyterian Hospital and never recovered.

A Dallas County sheriff’s deputy who reported being in the apartment Duncan where had stayed was hospitalized Wednesday after reporting Ebola-like symptoms. Deputy Michael Monnig also reported having “some contact” with Duncan’s family members. The Texas Department of State Health Services said, however, that Monnig did not come into contact with Duncan directly.

The last several days have been critical for America’s health system, but Dallas officials say they are still confident that U.S. health officials can stop the spread of Ebola in the communities.

The Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila issued an alert to Filipinos living abroad.

DFA spokesperson Charles Jose says, “In the U.S., we are confident that the Centers for Disease Control will be able to deal with the situation. We are advising Filipinos there to know more about the Ebola, to be informed.”

What are some key facts to know about Ebola?

The CDC says, among the symptoms are fever, severe headache, muscle pain, weakness, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and bleeding or bruising.

Recovery depends on good medical care and patient’s immune response.

There is no FDA approved vaccine for Ebola.

-When traveling to areas affected by an Ebola outbreak, practice careful hygiene like frequent hand-washing.

-Do not handle items that have come in contact with an infected person’s blood or bodily fluids.
