Fired SF cop says bigoted texts were jokes, apologizes

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The fired San Francisco cop who is under investigation for exchanging bigoted text messages about Filipinos and other minority groups with four other police officers says the texts were “jokes among friends and nothing more”.

Texts retrieved from former SFPD Sgt. Ian Furminger’s phone included slurs against blacks, gays, Mexicans and Filipinos.

One message referred to Filipinos as “filthy Flips” and “disgusting”.

Furminger told local media that the messages were dry humor and he apologized if anyone was offended.

The texts were revealed by federal prosecutors last week, following Furminger’s recent conviction for robbing drug suspects.

Police Chief Greg Suhr has said that if extreme bias is proven in the investigation, the four other police officers involved will be immediately fired.
